WINE

These exceptional wines are the product of a collaboration between Lionel Smit and winemaker Bernhard Bredell. Bernhard also produces his own artisanal wines under Scions of Sinai. Together they created and bottled a boutique collection of wines.

Recent Vintages

Mimicking Lionel Smit’s paintings, the wines are named from the starting vintage (2017), Series #1 and Series #2 and following year’s vintage (2018) Series #3 and Series #4.

The exclusivity and small batch production make these wines collectables. The striking labels are designed by Lionel Smit and vary according to each vintage. Made with a Mediterranean flavour-profile in mind, fitting to South Africa’s climate, incorporating traditional principles which respect the purity of the wine and its origin. To celebrate wine, in its unaltered and natural state, nothing is added or removed during the process (no filtration). Using lesser-known cultivars add to their abstractness, making them unpretentious and unique by their very nature.

Series #6 2019 (Syrah, Cinsault)

Series #6 2019 (Syrah, Cinsault)

Pure and lean. Lemon-like acidity. With well-balanced complexity. Good chalky fine-grained grape tannins add to the refreshing but complex style of the wine. Lengthy follow with an appealing tartness to it, like pomegranate seeds.

Series #5 2019 (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc)

Series #5 2019 (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc)

Balanced and concentrated. Some nice lemon and stone fruit creaminess complemented by a slight residual sugar. Well integrated with soft acidity and lingering follow. No wooded notes, even though it is aged in older aged oak barrels.
