THE STUDIO

Lionel Smit is one of South Africa’s most prolific artists, best known for his contemporary portraiture executed through monumental canvases and sculptures.

Lionel Smit’s art is defined by a deeply rooted symbiosis between sculpture and painting. From his birthplace in Pretoria, Smit was exposed to a world of art through his father, revered sculptor, Anton Smit, who worked from his studio adjacent to the family home

The Venue

The home of Lionel Smit is an awe-inspiring studio located in the historical Paarde Vlei precint in Somerset West, 40 km from the City of Cape Town. The studio was designed and built by renowned architect Stuart Hermansen of HB Architects. Herman achieved a versatile and voluminous space, church-like in spatial quality.

The Lionel Smit Studio is not just an art gallery. It is a destination where you’ll find space and inspiration through art, and architecture. The studio is dedicated to Lionel Smit’s art alone – which you can connect with intimately. A display of his personal art collection is on show, providing a glimpse into Lionel’s own inspirations.
